Westi, a loggerhead sea turtle, was released back into the ocean on Wednesday, June 6th. Rescued by the Holden Beach Turtle Patrol Stranding Team last June (2011), Westi spent the summer, winter and spring at the Karen Beasley Sea Turtle Hospital in Topsail. Members of the HB Turtle Patrol were present to see Westi head out to sea. Curt & Kathy, of the HBTP, two of the team members who helped rescue Westi, spoke of her increased activity upon smelling the ocean. They also said she put on about 100 pounds while in treatment. Westi was one of fourteen sea turtles returned safely to the ocean after recovering from injuries and illness. Congratulations to the rescue team and the people at the Karen Beasley Turtle Hospital for their success.
