Innovative Surgery on Injured Sea Turtle

Doctors at NC State University in Raleigh recently completed experimental surgery on a sea turtle. This sea turtle was found by an Holden Beach town employee on the west end of the island. He called the Turtle Patrol’s stranding team. Team members Pat Anderson and Sue Hoffacker took the turtle (named Holden III) to the Karen Beasley Sea Turtle Hospital on Topsail island. The green sea turtle weighs about seven pounds and had a 3” gash to its head, a fractured left front flipper and is possibly blind in one eye. Veterinarians at NCSU did the surgery to help the turtle’s skull heal correctly. Holden III is back at the turtle hospital where it will undergo rehabilitation. Hopes are to get Holden III back into the wild next year.
