There are five species of Sea Turtles that have been known to nest in North Carolina: Loggerhead, Green, Leatherback, Kemp's Ridley and Hawksbill. In recent history (last 15 years) of the Holden Beach Turtle Patrol we have recorded all but the Hawksbill on our beach. Hawksbill turtles usually lay further south in the Caribbean and only occasionally come this far north. Loggerhead turtles are the species we see most frequently and what we’ve had so far this year. This photo is of a Loggerhead mother who came ashore and laid nest #55 earlier this summer.
