July 5 2011 Update

posted: July 5, 2011, 2:01 PM

June was a busy month for the Turtle Patrol. For 9 days early in the month we had at least one nest everyday. On June 16 and again on June 29 we had three nests each morning! This brings our total to 23 nests for the season. This is slightly more than last year at this time . Three “natural nests” were left where the momma laid them so we don’t know how many eggs were in them. We had some reports from visitors that there was a momma laying eggs the evening of July 3 but she might have been frightened away by white flashlights or camera flashes. Please refrain from using flash cameras if you see a turtle on the beach.

There was a large crowd at Turtle Talk last week with over 240 attendees—a reminder if you’re planning to attend to get there early if you want a seat.
