Equipment on the beach

posted: October 7, 2020, 11:01 AM

A couple of weeks ago we announced that the "turtle season" is over for 2020 on Holden Beach. But there is still some Turtle Patrol equipment still on the beach. This equipment may look just like the marking of a turtle nest, but sadly, these are not viable nests. We still have equipment marking locations where there were nests earlier this season but the nests were damaged or destroyed during the storm in early August. These nests may have unhatched eggs that are not viable. These smell great to predators such as foxes on the beach. Metal grates and cages are put over these locations to keep the predators from digging these eggs and egg shells up and spreading them over the beach. Eventually these eggs will decompose and go back to nature. We will be removing the equipment.
