First nest to hatch in NC
posted: July 21, 2024, 10:55 AM
Nest 2 boiled overnight on Monday July 15 making it the first nest to hatch in NC this season. About 100 hatchlings made it down the long, dark runway into the ocean. Other nests are being "collared" when they reach 50 days after they were laid, when doing this we add landscape collars, edging and ramps to each nest to help guide turtles toward the ocean.
Due to recommendations from the NC Wildlife Resources Commission, we are not permitted to share nest locations. We suggest you look for red shirts on the beach and check on the status of nests nearby.
Also please note that we do not use lights of any kind (including red) on the hatchlings as they head to the ocean.
Of you see a nest hatching or hatchlings on the beach and a turtle patrol member is not around, please call our stranding team at 910 754-0766 and stand-by for instructions. Please don't touch the hatchlings and allow them to make their way into the water. Please don't shine lights on them or don't take flash photos.
Turtle Talk and Children's Turtle Time will continue to be held Wednesdays at the Holden Beach Chapel. The children's program is t 4 p..m. and Turtle Talk for the whole family at 7 p.m.
