Lots of activity on the beach

It's been an action-packed week on the beach for turtle patrol members and visitors.

We've had 2 new nests this week. Yes, this is slowing down, indicating that we are nearing the end of the nesting season. However, we did have a "surprise" this week--one of our false crawls from back in May---turned into nest #61 ---when our morning rider spotted a depression forming. That momma turtle did a great job of hiding those eggs from us! This brings our total nests for the season so far to 62. The last nest for the season last year was laid on August 10...so there is still a chance for more nests.

We also had several nests boil and close this week. With numerous hatchlings heading to the water to the delight of patrol members and visitors alike. To date we have recorded 743 hatchlings into the ocean. We get this number from the number of eggshells found in the nests after during the closing/inventory. Look for Turtle Patrol members on the beach in the evenings for updates on nests.

We're pleased to report that the Kemp's Ridley turtle that was taken to the hospital earlier this week is doing well. Lillii B is still at the hospital, doing great and eating well. She is getting time in the therapy pool every day. No release date has been set but be sure to follow The Karen Beasley Sea Turtle Rescue and Rehabilitation Center where they will announce her release date.

Turtle Talk and Children's Turtle Time continues this week...Wednesdays at the Holden Beach Chapel.
